Formally known as Witch Hazel, SpellBook’s debut album “Magick & Mischief” delivers a much-needed infusion of brilliant classical rock and proto-metal in an anemic 2020 music landscape for such offerings. Nothing has been lost between name change as SpellBook delivers one of the best releases of the year that keeps the best of their former namesake while exploring new territory that still is familiar enough for any past fans while being accessible to new audiences.

It's hard to argue with the results of SpellBook’s first song. “Wands to The Sky” guides you straight into a musical journey akin to the very best of Black Sabbath and Pentagram, but with a fresh rendition to every note that keeps you jamming throughout.  The dynamic melodies flow effortlessly throughout with the vocals delivering a feel-good and energized quality that keeps you enthralled throughout all 7 tracks. It’s hard not to be captivated by this album as it’s clear these guys are possessed by the spirits of the greats before them. They are a brilliant homage to where the genre has been and where it’s heading.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that SpellBook is merely another band in a long line of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Pentagram worship. SpellBook takes the reigns left by those bands and leads the genre in a new and exciting direction that will instantly make this a classic release in the decade ahead. Don’t miss out on this release and make damn sure to keep close tabs on this badass band.

Particular highlights to this album include the tracks ‘Black Shadow’, ‘Ominous Skies’, and ‘Dead Detectives’. There is no question that this will be on repeat in this reviewer’s playlist for the unforeseeable future. “Magick & Mischief” releases September 25th digitally, in vinyl, and CD.
