Journey to the Withering Rain with Dronny Darko and G M Slater

Sound design master Boris Puzan, aka Dronny Darko, has teamed with G M Slater to bring us a new cinematic dark ambient journey: Dissolving Into Solitary Landscapes. For those who enjoy the ambient and atmospheric soundscape style of music, Dronny Darko needs no introduction, and he has teamed with G M Slater to deliver yet another album of cinematic dark ambient excellence. Celebrating his tenth anniversary in the scene, we are given this new speculative exploration into a solemn, near-future world of despair and bleak serenity.

Dissolving Into Solitary Landscapes opens with a slowed texture of pads as we learn of the surface world destroyed by an insidious rain, all created by a climate repair project that has gone awry. People are forced underground to an existence mired in perpetual scavenging for survival, and our main character has decided that life is no longer tolerable. This is the telling of his journey to the surface to be resigned to a slow, withering death under the rains, where he will be dissolved into the landscape.

While the narrative sets a very dour - and as mentioned above, “bleak” - mood, the tracks within the album are not harsh and loathsome, rather subtle and rhythmic. Industrial pulses that blend into an organic bed texture; the opening track, The Infinity Bell, with its kinetic analog pounding gives a martial feel to the ethereal pads, and each subsequent track helps to construct this environment in the listener’s mind; this subterranean refuge of machinery constantly thrumming in the background of these caverns and grottoes of the sanctuary. Rainy field recordings are laced within and throughout the songs to blend in with the subtle sound pads all to help the listener envision this drab world of underground, gray resolution blanketed by the constant and fearful rains that batter the surface.

Dissolving Into Solitary Landscapes is an excellent addition to the Cryo Chamber label, as well as for Dronny Darko, who has given us a decade of sound design excellence, and will no doubt give us ten more.
